That’s how bedtime goes in our house. Emmy needs her Daddy arm—that little place to curl up, feel loved, and have Daddy all to herself for a while. On the nights she misses it, she misses that Daddy love.

We’ve been telling stories for a long time, but Emmy has made one thing very clear: she wants made-up Daddy stories. So we make them as we go. Daddy starts, Emmy adds an idea, and sometimes we go a little overboard. Sometimes Daddy just keeps telling the story until Emmy is fast asleep.

Bennie always hops into her bed to play with us. Daddy’s arm occasionally becomes a chew toy. Mommy and brother come in, join us, and say their goodnights. It isn’t always quiet, and the story doesn’t always go where we thought it would.

But this time is sacred to us. A little silliness, a made-up adventure, and a daughter tucked into her daddy’s arm. That’s where these stories began.
